Dr. Rick  Marschall ND, Naturopathic Physician
Homeopathic Medicine

In the naturopathic physician’s pallet of colors, none compares with the dramatic results, yet difficulty of determination of the similimum, the correct medicine out of a few thousand possibilities.  Correct in that it represents the electromagnetic signature of a particular human being.  Like a fingerprint or retinal scan it turns out to be a frequency of energy that will positively influence an individual’s biochemistry and physiology in such a way that a “cure” can occur.  Homeopathy began in the early 1800s in Germany when physician Samuel Hahneman was investigating why the bark of the cinchona tree, a cure for malaria, caused the same symptoms as malaria when take accidentally by a healthy person.  He postulated instead of giving medicines that counteracted symptoms, we might be able to give medicines that encouraged symptoms to occur, thus stimulating the bodies’ inherent healing mechanisms.  He believed that symptoms were the bodies attempts at cure, and we must find medicines that enhanced that cure rather than just made the symptoms go away.

At first, this theory failed because remedies that enhanced symptoms too much could be harmful.  Dr. Hahneman therefore tried diluting these medicines, but then the enhancement effect was too weak to work.  Next he tried succussing the medicine, that is, shaking it many times each time he diluted it.  This was his big discovery.  Now the medicine was safe.  If the right medicine was chosen, the succussed dilution had the intended affect on the individual, and the immune system was enhanced.  The illness abated and the patient’s health was restored without side-effects.

Between the early 1800s and 1920s Homeopathic Medicine was practiced by more physicians than any other medicine.  In many countries today such as South America and India it is still very popular.  Most naturopathic physicians are trained to some degree in this art.  It had a resurgence here in America since the 1970s.  You can purchase low potency over the counter homeopathic medicines in health food stores for acute conditions such as colds, flu, coughs, vaginitis, ear aches etc.   The real value of this medicine comes when nothing else works.  Some conditions require the deep impact that the homeopathic medicine has on the constitution of the person.

Homeopathic physicians take a very complete history to prescribe the correct remedy.   The questions that they ask are different that usually asked by a physician.  There are so many remedies, over 1000, that to find the right one, unique characteristics of the person must be identified.  Consequently food desires, personality traits such as fears, phobias, sensitivity to hot and cold, neatness, time of day symptoms occurs, whether sensations occur in certain kinds of weather or while experiencing certain moods, all this must be taken into account.  The first interview will often last an hour or more.  A single dose of a medicine will be administered and the patient will be asked to wait for a reaction usually in a bout 2 to 6 weeks depending on the case.  Then a follow up is scheduled to see if the right remedy was given.  If not, the case is re-evaluated to find the next best choice until the patient’s health is restored.
